Harvard outscored the University of Maine by 12 points in the first quarter on the way to an 84-56 women’s basketball win Sunday at Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Adrianna Smith got her conference leading fifth double-double of the season in for the Black Bears (4-8).
Smith scored a team-high 16 points and had 10 rebounds. Paula Gallego added eight points and Sarah Talon and Caroline Bornemann each chipped in seven points.
Harvard (6-5) had three players score in double figures: McKenzie Forbes (23), Harmoni Turner (18) and Elena Rodriguez (13). Turner had a career-high seven steals.
(1) SOUTH CAROLINA 87, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 23: Zia Cooke scored 16 points, Aliyah Boston had 10 points and 13 rebounds for her 67th career double-double and host South Carolina steamrolled Charleston Southern (2-9).
The Gamecocks opened 11-0 for the second straight season and the fourth time in Coach Dawn Staley’s 15 seasons in charge.
(2) STANFORD 77, TENNESSEE 70: Cameron Brink had 21 points, a season-best 17 rebounds, six blocked shots to match her career high and a key 3-pointer before the third-quarter buzzer that gave host Stanford (11-1) much-needed momentum in beating Tennessee (7-6).
Haley Jones contributed 19 points and 12 rebounds and Hannah Jump scored 19 points and knocked down a decisive 3 with 1:15 left as Stanford overcame long scoring lapses coming off a two-week break for final exams to win its sixth straight.
Jordan Horston had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Tennessee.
(4) INDIANA 87, MOREHEAD STATE 24: Freshman Yarden Garzon scored 16 points and host (11-0) Indiana held Morehead State to four two-point baskets in the third-largest winning margin in the program’s history.
The only other larger winning margins were 100-24 decision over Taylor on Feb. 21, 1975 (76 points) and 111-47 win over Nichols State on Nov. 10, 2019 (64 points).
Sara Scalia added 13 points and Sydney Parrish and Gorham’s Mackenzie Holmes 12 each for Indiana, which shot 56% from the field.
(5) NOTRE DAME 63, (6) VIRGINIA TECH 52: Olivia Miles had 16 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and five steals to lead visiting Notre Dame (9-1) over Virginia Tech (10-1) in an ACC opener for both teams.
Miles scored 13 of her points in the second half as the Irish rallied from a three-point deficit entering the fourth quarter.
Georgia Amoore led the Hokies with 20 points.
(8) N.C. STATE 77, CLEMSON 59: Madson Hayes scored a career-high 20 points as host North Carolina State (11-1) beat visiting Clemson (8-4) in the opener of Atlantic Coast Conference play for both teams.
(9) UCONN 85, FLORIDA STATE 77: Aaliyah Edwards scored a career-high 26 points, Lou Lopez Senechal added 23, and UConn (8-2), which was missing Coach Geno Auriemma, beat Florida State in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase at Uncasville, Connecticut.
The school said a few minutes before tip that Auriemma wasn’t feeling well in the morning shootaround and would be out for the game.
Associate head coach Chris Dailey filled in for the Hall of Famer and improved to 14-0 in games he’s missed over their 37 years together at UConn.
It’s been an emotional week for Auriemma, 68. His mom passed away on Dec. 8 and the funeral was earlier this week. Marsiella Auriemma was 91 years old.
(12) IOWA 99, NORTHERN IOWA 74: Caitlin Clark made up for a tough shooting day by making 13 of 14 free throws and scoring 26 points as host Iowa (9-3) used a big advantage at the foul line to defeat Northern Iowa (5-4).
(14) IOWA STATE 74, (25) VILLANOVA 62: Emily Ryan had 16 points in a balanced Iowa State attack and missed a triple-double by a rebound and the Cyclones (8-2) took down Villanova (9-3) in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase at Uncasville, Connecticut.
(16) OREGON 97, CHARLESTON 33: Te-Hina Paopao, Endyia Rogers and Ahlise Hurst all scored 15 points, and host 16 Oregon (9-1) shut down one of the nation’s top offenses, routing Charleston (5-5).
Charleston, averaging 77.8 points per game, scored 12 points in the middle two quarters and shot 20% for the game.
(20) ARIZONA 75, (18) BAYLOR 54: Shaina Pellington scored 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting and had eight assists, Cate Reese added 13 points and 13 rebounds to help Arizona (9-1) beat Baylor (8-4) at the Pac-12 Coast-to-Coast Challenge at Dallas.
(24) OKLAHOMA 76, SOUTHERN 50: Madi Williams scored 14 points to go over 2,000 points for her career, Ana Llanusa also scored 14 points and host Oklahoma (9-1) topped Southern (3-7).
MEN’S BASKETBALL
(7) TEXAS 72, STANFORD 62: Marcus Carr had 17 points and five assists as host Texas (9-1), playing again without suspended coach Chris Beard, beat Stanford (4-7).
Carr sparked an eight-point frenzy in a 48-second span early in the second half that put the Longhorns ahead to stay.
It was the second game the Longhorns played without Beard, who was arrested and spent nearly 11 hours in jail Monday on a felony domestic violence charge. The woman who called police to his home said he choked, bit and hit her during an argument. Beard’s attorney has said the coach is innocent.
(21) TCU 88, MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE 43: Mike Miles scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half and host TCU (9-1) rolled to an easy win over Mississippi Valley State (1-11).
TCU has won seven consecutive games since a one-point loss to Northwestern State on Nov. 14 briefly knocked it out of The Associated Press Top 25.
USC 74, (19) AUBURN 71: Boogie Ellis scored a career-high 28 points and Southern California (9-3) held off Auburn (9-2) at Los Angeles for its fifth straight win.
Neither team led by more than six points in the second half of the teams’ first meeting since 1977.
