M. York Stephens
PORTLAND – M. York Stephens of Gorham died on Nov. 27, 2022 at the Maine Medical Center after a severe stroke on Thanksgiving Day. Born on Feb. 2, 1945 in Portland, he was the only child of Irma and Merrill Y. Stephens. He graduated from Deering High School before attending Colby and the University of Maine, Portland.
He worked as an insurance adjuster and appraiser and in the automotive field at Norman Lincoln Mercury and as a general manager of Acme Body Shop for almost 20 years. In 1994, he married Jeanne Palais. Together they had many adventures including trips to the Canadian Rockies, England, and Portugal. When their home burned down in 2020, it took 14 months to rebuild on the same site and York could not have been happier to be back in his home.
York is survived by his wife Jeanne; son John, daughter Marion, stepdaughter Hope Anne; as well as granddaughters Chelsea and Lucile and grandsons Oliver and Zephyr. Also Seth Stephens, Andrew Timiney, and Remy Vaughn; as well as his faithful and loved dog Mistymoor.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday Dec. 7, 11 a.m. at St. Pius X Church on Ocean Avenue in Portland. A celebration of York’s life will follow in the church hall. Burial will be announced in the spring.
