Edith F. Coppersmith

STANDISH – Edith F. Coppersmith, 94, passed away on Nov. 16, 2022 at Ledgewood Manor in Windham. She was born on Aug. 28, 1928 in Portland, the daughter of Samuel Jensen and Alice (Duran) Jensen.

Edith graduated from Kavenaugh Grammar School and Cathedral High School, class of 1946. She held many jobs with insurance companies and lawyers. Later in life she went to school to become a Cosmetologist and worked at St. Joseph’s Manor for 18 years.

Married to Portland Police Detective Bernard S. Coppersmith, together they had five children. Later in life, divorced. She moved to Standish in 1999 to an in-law apartment with her daughter, son-in-law, and grandson.

Edith was one to keep busy, she loved to socialize. She joined the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Guild and made many friends and enjoyed charitable things. She also joined Lake Region Senior Citizens and enjoyed card games every Tuesday. A member of the Sisterhood of St. Monica and knitted shawls for cancer patients. She was ready for a card game, a ride to New Hampshire, or getting together with family.

She was predeceased by her mother and father; sisters Joan Tapp Robinson, and Virginia Jensen Stenzel, brothers Richard Jensen and James Jensen; son, Michael R. Coppersmith; grandson, Kevin Coppersmith; and son-in-law, Walter “Bill” Brown.

She is survived by sons William B. Coppersmith (Mary Ann), Robert J. Coppersmith (Paula), David G. Coppersmith (Karen), daughter, Nancy E. Brown; grandchildren, William B. Coppersmith, Jr. (Whitney), Andrew M. Coppersmith (Sara), Deanna Miras (Steve), Kellie Durgin (Keith), Ryan Menario, Hope Coppersmith, Jennifer Coolbrith (Seth), Mikey Coppersmith, Walter D. Brown, Jr. who she quite often referred to as her fifth son (Taylor); great-grandchildren, Eli D. and Haddie M. Coppersmith, Nathan, Derek and Emilia Miras, Liam K. Coppersmith, Zackory Gallant, Kylee, Jackson and Jett Durgin. Also, referred to as her second daughter, Jamie L. Haley (Potter) of Windham. She also has a dear friend of many years, Jackie Neilson of Windham who was always there for her. She is also survived by many cousins; nieces and nephews, too many to mention.

The above was actually written by Edith a few years ago. She was quite the planner and had a wonderful sense of humor. She will be missed.

The family would like to give a huge thank you to the staff at Ledgewood Manor in Windham who Edith truly grew to love. Too many to mention.

A visitation will be held, 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 22 at the Windham Chapel of Dolby, Blais and Segee, 434 River Rd. A funeral service will be held, 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 23 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham, ME 04062. Burial at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland will immediately follow.
