KENNEBUNK – Stephen Canders, 75, of Kennebunk, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2022, at his home, having lived a full and laugh-filled life.
He was born in Portland and is a graduate of Bethlehem Central High School in Bethlehem, N.Y., Colby College and the University of Chicago School of Law. Stephen always stated that the most challenging and fulfilling education he ever received was at BCHS, and that he was honored and privileged to have had the opportunity to attend U of C Law School. He lived from one end of the State of Maine to the other, in Washburn, Augusta and Kennebunk.
A part of his law career was spent as general counsel for the Finance Authority of Maine.
Stephen is predeceased by his grandmother, Ethel M. (Flood) Raley, grandfather, Robert V. Canders Sr.; father-in-law, Laurel Thompson; mentor, Jack Beck; partner, Bill Flora; and friends Freddie Vahlsing, Jr. Eugene B. Brown Sr., Wes Dobson, Bill Flora and Dan Todzia, none of whom he ever forgot.
He is survived by the love of his life, Joan Cook; his sons James, (Lauren) John and Samuel, daughter, Sarah Thrall; grandchildren Brenden and Jack; a brother, Roger Canders; his cousin, Rick Mitchell, with whom he spent many wonderful times in Greenville; and friends James Ferland, Mike Zimmer, Steve Adnopoz, Naoto Inoue, Karen Wolfram, and Sandra Howarth.
It was Steven’s wish to have a gathering of friends where his favorite pastime of telling stories would take place. Friends are invited to share stories at a later date and will be announced by Bibber Memorial Chapel.
