A motorcyclist died in a collision with a Windham school bus and another vehicle Tuesday afternoon, shutting down Route 202 in the vicinity of Libby Avenue for nearly two hours.

Gorham Police Chief Christopher Sanborn said the bus was carrying student athletes from Windham, News Center Maine reported.

Sanborn told News Center Maine that the male motorcyclist was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name had not been released by Gorham police late Tuesday evening.

The student athletes were evaluated at the scene, but no serious injuries were reported. The condition of the driver of the third vehicle was not known.

WGME-TV reported that the students on the bus were members of the Windham High School girls field hockey team. The team was scheduled to play Scarborough High School at 5 p.m. in a state quarterfinal playoff game, but the game was canceled, according to posts on both team’s Facebook pages.

Sanborn said the motorcycle struck the bus as it was making a left hand turn from Route 202 onto Libby Avenue. The motorcycle bounced off the bus and hit the other vehicle, which had stopped behind the bus.

The Cumberland County Regional Communications Center sent out an alert just after 4 p.m. urging drivers to avoid the area of Gray Road, which also is known as Route 202, while police investigated the crash. The road reopened just after 5:30 p.m.
