Today, Kittery takes a historic step into the age of recreational cannabis retail. The outlet village, a well known destination for a variety of retail shops and has a new attraction: Theory Wellness. The Kittery recreational dispensary will be the first of its kind in the shopping center and for the Town.

While the opening will be new for the town, Theory partnering with a non-profit for their launch is not. During the first week of sales, the company will donate 10% of its net profits to the non-profit Footprints Food Pantry. The community-based organization, just down the street from the dispensary, works to reduce the impact of hunger in the community by providing fresh produce, non-perishables, meats, dairy, and household products.

The Theory organization has long been a supporter of nonprofits where they operate their dispensaries in Massachusetts and Maine. When opening their Bangor Dispensary, Theory partnered with the Bangor Farmer’s Market through a donation of sales from the opening weekend. In Massachusetts, they donated a mobile food pantry to a soup kitchen in Chicopee, where they also have a medical & recreational dispensary. In Great Barrington, for the past few years, they’ve made annual contributions to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs (SNAP), and Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) benefits at the local farmer’s market to increase access to healthy foods.

Thomas Winstanley, Chief Marketing Officer for Theory Wellness, says it’s part of the company’s mission. “We’re excited and fortunate to be able to use our cannabis operations as a force for good at a local level. Legal cannabis is only as good as the community that surrounds it. Every community has its challenges, and operating in Kittery, we inherit those challenges, too. It’s important to do what we can to help those who are on the ground actively working to solve them.”

The newest dispensary is located just minutes off I-95 on Rt. 1 in the Kittery Outlets at 8 Dexter Lane and will be open 7-days a week from 10 AM to 7 PM. It will be the fourth Maine dispensary, following locations in Waterville, Bangor, and South Portland.
