Allen Corell Sands
CAPE ELIZABETH – Allen Corell Sands, 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Oct. 15, 2022. He was born July 6, 1939 in Providence, R.I., the son of the late E. Joseph Sands and Natalie Elizabeth (Corell) Sands. Allen graduated from Cranston High School in 1957.
After graduation he served with the National Guard and attended the University of Rhode Island. In 1961, he married Jane Catherine Donahue and settled in Connecticut where they started their family. They were married nearly 49 years until Jane’s passing in 2010.
Al enjoyed a long successful career in the fire protection industry where he made many friends and earned the respect of his colleagues. He retired in 1997 and remained in Maine enjoying all of Maine’s offerings, particularly boating and fishing in and around Casco Bay and taking his grandchildren camping.
Later in life, Allen enjoyed the love and companionship of his partner, Shirley Packard of St. Petersburg, Fla.
He was predeceased by his brothers Robert Sands and David Sands. Surviving are his son, Michael Sands of North Attleboro, Mass. and his partner, Kathy Merz, daughter, Brenda Sands and her husband, Jeff Cain of Cape Elizabeth and son, Kevin Sands and his wife, Robin of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren, Matthew, Kate, Abby, Lizzy, Jack and Aidan; and many nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful to the staff of The Mooring at the Downs in Scarborough and to Kindred Hospice for their loving care.
A memorial service will be held Friday Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Cape Elizabeth. A private burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Cape Elizabeth.
