Robert R. Smith
BRISTOL – Robert Smith, 71, passed away peacefully on Oct. 9, 2022 surrounded by family after a brief battle with Merkel Cell Carcinoma. He was born in Boston, Mass. and split his time between Haverhill and Plymouth, Mass. while growing up.
He moved to Maine in the mid ’70s to take over his father’s shoe business and raise his family in South Freeport. Most recently, Robert lived in Bristol, while still enjoying many summer weeks at his family’s house on Priscilla Beach. Sitting steadfast on the porch, digging for clams, boating, fishing, and third of July cookouts were among Robert’s favorite memories and pastimes, so it is no surprise he spent his last days in the place he loved the most – Plymouth, Mass.
Robert had a passion for cooking, a good zinfandel, and music. He could play an album or even a song on the right speakers, at the right volume and you’d swear you had never heard music that good before. He was a loving father, brother, grandfather, and exceptional friend who will be missed by so many.
Robert was predeceased by his parents Ken and Eleanor Smith.
He is survived by his children, Abigail and her husband and daughter, Andrew and Stella Deci of Bath; Richard and his wife Addy of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and daughter, Julia and her husband Andrew and baby-to-be, Veilleux, of South Freeport. In addition, Robert is survived by siblings Ken, Candy, Cathy, and Lisa, their spouses and partners; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A service and celebration of Robert’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 at Cartmell-Davis, 619 State Rd. in Manomet, Mass.
