Loren D. Eiane

Loren D. Eiane 1957 – 2022 HARPSWELL – Loren D. Eiane, 65, of Harpswell, passed away on Oct. 2, 2022, in the loving presence of family, at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, following a brief illness. Born on Feb. 4, 1957 to Birger and Alice (Barrows) Eiane in Elmira, N.Y., Loren spent much of his youth in Huntsville, Ala., later graduating from Clear Lake High School, near Houston, Texas. The highlight of his boyhood summers was spending time at his grandparents’ property on Basin Point in Harpswell. He attended the University of Texas and the University of Alabama before graduating with a degree in computer science from the University of Southern Maine, forming lifelong friendships throughout his college years. Following college, Loren backpacked across Europe including spending time on his father’s family farm on the west coast of Norway. He was forever proud of his Norwegian heritage and was an initial member of the Maine Sons of Norway organization. Loren was an adventurer, visiting 48 states before he married the love of his life, Kristi King, who he met at the Dolphin Marina on Basin Point. Loren and Kristi raised their family on the west side of Basin Point on land that has been in Loren’s family for over 70 years, acquired by his grandfather, F. Thaxter “Dud” Barrows, who was highly influential in shaping the direction of Loren’s life. Naturally attracted to water, Loren made his living primarily as a commercial lobsterman on his boat the Kristi K II; prior to lobstering, he was a commercial diver for scallops and sea urchins in Casco Bay. He was a consummate do-it-yourselfer who built a home in Harpswell, camp in Greenwood, and most recently a playhouse for his grandchildren on Basin Point. The greatest joy in his life was spending time with family, especially with his beloved grandchildren. He loved outdoor activities—hiking, camping and boating in the waters of Casco Bay. He had a fondness for classic boats and planned to teach his grandchildren to sail. Hosting lobster feasts in the summer was another favorite activity. He was known for having an engaging personality, a hearty laugh and the ability to tell a good story. Loren is survived by his wife of 38 years, Kristi K. Eiane, of Harpswell; son, Erik Eiane of Harpswell, daughter, Kelsi Eiane and husband, Benjamin Lynch of Lexington Park, Md., “adopted” Norwegian son, Knut Grundvig and wife, Marie-Christine of Oslo, Norway; grandchildren Allee and Isaac Lynch, and Theo, William and Nicholas Grundvig; brother, Per Eiane and wife, Janet of Huntsville, Ala., brother, Courtney Eiane and wife, Melinda of Huntsville, Ala.; aunt, Margaret Hayden of East Wakefield, N.H.; and many other family members including nieces, nephews and cousins. He lived his best life every day on Basin Point, a place that had special meaning and significance to him. In Loren’s memory, spend time in nature with the ones you love or offer a helping hand to a friend or neighbor. A service to commemorate Loren’s life will be held in the spring. Donations in memory of Loren can be made to the Maine Island Trail Association online at: mita.org or by mail at: 100 Kensington St., 2nd flr. Portland, ME 04103
