John P. Roberts Sr.

PORTLAND – John P. Roberts Sr., 75, of Portland passed away on Friday, Oct. 7, 2022 at Maine Medical Center, with his sister, Donna, by his side.

He was born on May 12, 1947 a son of the late Ralph W. and Eleanor A. (Sweeney) Roberts Jr. He grew up in Portland attending local area schools. He left high school in his junior year to join the U.S. Army during Vietnam, earning a Purple Heart while overseas. Upon returning home, he learned to overcome his new disabilities from the war and went to work for the City of Portland Parks and Recreation Department as a mechanic. After retiring from the City of Portland, John went to work for the VFW in Portland.

He loved watching the Red Sox and the Patriots as well as the “Price is Right”. John enjoyed doing word searches and playing cards. Most of all he loved his children and grandchildren and thought of them often.

He is survived by his two sons, John Roberts Jr. and Andrew Roberts, both of Portland and his two daughters, Kristin Roberts and Jaime Lynn Homewood, also both of Portland. He also leaves behind several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren; as well as his siblings Ralph W. Roberts of Portland, Sharon Pizzo and her husband, Joe, of Falmouth, Nancy St. Peter of Westbrook, James Roberts and his wife, Vicky, of Naples, Donna Brown and her husband, Tom, of Casco and David Roberts of Portland; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also the brother of the late Jean Grimaldi and Edward Roberts.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Friday Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway, South Portland. A celebration of his life will follow at the Elk’s Lodge, 1945 Congress Street, Portland.
