Adult walking soccer program kicks off
Interested in joining adult walking soccer? The session started Sept. 1 and extends to Oct. 27 from 5:15-6:15 p.m. at Standish Memorial Park.

Walking soccer is an emerging sport where players walk instead of run. It’s intended to help people of all ages achieve and maintain an active lifestyle. The sport has been found to not only lower heart rate and blood pressure, burn fat, and build muscle, but also improve balance and stamina.
The session is $35 for all sessions and $5 to drop-in on individual practices. Come prepared with shin guards, cleats, water and exercise clothes. Go to standishme.myrec.com to learn more.
Castle in the Clouds
Standish recreation is hosting a trip to Lucknow Mansion, also known as Castle in the Clouds, Sept. 29 from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Moultonborough, New Hampshire.
The mansion, which as built in the Ossipee mountains in 1914 by architect J. Williams Beal of Boston, includes 16 rooms an was known for many amenities that were ahead of their time. These included interlocking kitchen tiles, a circular shower, a house-wide phone system, and a central vacuum system for easy cleaning.
Enjoy a self-guided tour the mansion, which overlooks an estate of over 5,000 acres surrounded by breathtaking mountains, garden landscapes, and one of the largest lakes in New Hampshire. A picnic lunch is included in the $29 fee; make a lunch selection at check out at standishme.myrec.com.
School vacation camps
Standish recreation is offering day camps during school in-service days and vacations to quench boredom and keep kids active and occupied. Day camps will include field trips, activities, sports and arts and crafts.
The first school day camp will be Oct. 7 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at George E. Jack School. The crew is taking kids to Happy Wheels in Westbrook for a skate party. Along with roller skating there will be time for arts and crafts and outdoor games.
Field trips usually consist of wintery fun such as sledding and skating as well as visiting local parks (provided conditions are suitable). Scheduled activities start at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday during February and April vacations, with the exception of national holidays. Bring a packed lunch, snacks, a water bottle, outdoor clothes, a change of clothes, and sneakers. Kids are welcome to bring their own sleds and skates.
