Robert C. Macdonald
MOODY – Robert C. Macdonald, of Moody, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2022, at Pinnacle Nursing Home in North Berwick two days before his 98th birthday, after a long battle with dementia.
He was born in Roslindale, Mass. on Aug. 22, 1924, the son of Algo and Edith (Townsend) Macdonald. He lived in Belmont, Mass. graduated from Belmont High School, and worked several years at M.I.T before enlisting in the United States Coast Guard, which was a part of the U.S. Navy during World War II. While there, he took courses at Columbia University in New York and became a pharmacists mate until his honorable discharge.
He graduated from Boston University, College of Business Administration and was employed at the Provident Institution for Savings in Boston, Mass. for a number of years. After that, he worked at John Hancock Insurance Company also in Boston, Mass., as an underwriter of pension plan contracts. After nine years, he left Boston to teach 7th Grade Mathematics in Lowell, Mass. at the James S. Daley Junior High School. He then attained his master’s degree in Education at Fitchburg State College.
Retiring after teaching for 27 years, he moved to Haverhill, Mass. and volunteered at the Haverhill Council on Aging. He agreed to take on the job of editor of their monthly newspaper, which he did for four years.
Following this period in his life, Mr. Macdonald moved permanently to Moody, purchasing a home with his dear friend, Joseph Casper.
During his lifetime, he traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia, as well as an ‘Around the World’ trip in 1972, and many motor trips across the United States and Canada. During his Maine retirement, he was employed by the Ogunquit River Inn and Suites in Ogunquit from 1995 until 2014. Mr. Macdonald traveled to the Palm Springs, Calif. area and Las Vegas, Nev. every fall for six to eight weeks, and spent several months in Pompano Beach, Fla. in the winter with his dear friend, Joseph Casper, with whom he taught at the Daley School for 27 years.
