Darrell J. Crandell

KENNEBUNK – Darrell J. Crandell, 68, died on Aug. 22, 2022, at the Kennebunk Center for Health and Rehabilitation.

Darrell was born on April 27, 1954, in Geneva, N.Y., the son of the late Donald E. Crandell and Dorothy J. Crandell, and predeceased by his twin brother, David. He graduated from Glenwood High School in Canton, Ohio in 1972.

After graduation, Darrell moved with his family to Scarborough. He had a varied work career, starting out as an auto mechanic, then co-managing a garage, driving semi-trailer with several companies, and finally working for Union Oil Co.

Family and friends were of utmost importance to Darrell and he enjoyed spending time with them for conversation, games, and celebrations—especially the meals. Darrell loved travel and adventure and was fortunate to have made many coast-to coast trips, mostly tent-camping, as well as several trips to England visiting family.

He loved a variety of music, including country and rock, and fondly remembered attending a Rolling Stones concert in 1989. Darrell was an avid reader, interested in a wide variety of subjects, and a huge supporter of sister Sharon’s fiction.

Darrell was passionate about trucks and cars and when he could no longer attend NASCAR races he enjoyed watching them on TV. He liked watching car auctions and was always making suggestions to his siblings and friends as to what autos they should buy. He also loved watching sports, notably soccer and especially women’s soccer because he felt they were better players!

Darrell is survived by sister, Sharon Stephenson and Roy, brother, Mark Crandell and Betty, sister, Marsha Shoemaker; and nephews and nieces John Crandell; Travis, Jason, and Craig Shoemaker; and Jonathan, Mark, and Hannah Stephenson.

A service of remembrance will be held at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland on Saturday, Sept. 3, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Carolyn Lambert officiating. Interment will be private.
