Homing pigeons in wartime
Jon Bernhard of Westbrook will take part in a program about the use of homing pigeons during wartime when the Westbrook Historical Society meets at 10 a.m. Sept. 10, at the Community Center, 426 Bridge St.
Elizabeth Macalaster of Brunswick, who is the author of “War Pigeons,” will speak.
Bernhard, who has a pigeon loft in his backyard on Carlson Street, plans to bring a few of his 30 to 40 pigeons to release.

“In the future, he’d like to try racing his birds in an official pigeon race,” according to information released by Macalaster. “For now, he trains them regularly, looking to build them up to flights of over 100 miles.”
