The remains of a man, who lived alone in a home that exploded and caught fire Sunday morning, have been recovered by investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
In a release issued Sunday evening, Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said investigators believe the remains are those of 71-year-old David Crutcher.
Crutcher lived alone at the home on 160 Fifield Road in Stonington, Moss said. Stonington is a town located on the southernmost tip of Deer Isle in Hancock County.
Emergency responders received the report of an explosion at the home around 8:52 a.m., Moss said. The State Fire Marshal’s Office spent Sunday afternoon processing the scene and were able to locate the remains of one person. Those remains have since been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for further examination, but are believed to be those of Crutcher.
The cause of the fire and explosion, which destroyed the home remain under investigation. Moss said investigators will return to the scene on Monday.
