A mother and her 2-year-old daughter were seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when their vehicle collided with a fully loaded dump truck on Route 113 in Standish.

Rebecca McVety, 32, of Standish, was driving a 2004 Volvo when it collided head-on with a Leavitt Earthworks dump truck fully loaded with dirt. The truck driver, 55-year-old Erik Betters of Standish, was not injured.

McVety was transported by Lifeflight helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland with life-threatening injuries, according to a release from Capt. Donald Foss of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. McVety’s 2-year-old daughter was transported by ambulance to the hospital with serious injuries.

McVety’s vehicle apparently crossed the centerline into the path of the dump truck, striking it head-on, Foss said. Each driver was wearing a seat belt and the toddler was securely fastened in a child safety seat, investigators determined.

Police are investigating whether distracted driving contributed to the crash. Speed and alcohol were not factors, Foss said. There was extensive damage to the car, and McVety and her daughter had to be extricated from the wreckage.

Route 113 in Standish, near its intersection with Route 25,  reopened around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, nearly five hours after the dump truck and car collided.
