The Hawthorne Community Association is hosting a chicken barbeque Aug. 28 to raise funds to repair Nathaniel Hawthorne’s boyhood home in Raymond.

The event will be held at Camp Wohelo, 25 Fire Lane 24, in Raymond, at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $15 per person and registration is due by Aug. 12 via email to Hawthorne@maine.rr.com or by calling 207-329-0537. 

Hawthorne was an iconic American novelist who is best known for authoring “The Scarlet Letter” and “The House of the Seven Gables.” He was 9 years old when he moved to the Raymond house with his family around 1813.

As part of the second phase of repairs in the fundraising campaign, the roof will be re-shingled, walls will be resided and/or painted, the front steps will be repaired or replaced, cracks to the interior walls will be fixed, landscaping will be completed and fencing will be added. Proceeds from the barbecue will go towards the goal of raising $75,000 during phase 2 of the fundraising campaign.

The public is also invited to attend the annual meeting of the Hawthorne Community Association after the barbecue.
