SANDY SPRING, Md. – Harry Elmont Henderson Jr., died on May 18, 2020, at Brooke Grove Retirement Village in Sandy Spring, Md. Born on Sept. 26, 1927, in Augusta, Harry was 92.
Harry was a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy and the University of Maine at Orono, and studied at Berkeley Divinity School in New Haven, Conn. He served as third mate on a Texaco tanker and later as a lieutenant (junior grade) in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Harry had a 33-year career with the Social Security Administration in Woodlawn, Md., where he worked in the Office of Disability Operations and staffed the black lung program at its inception. After retiring, he worked for 10 years as assistant manager of Meals on Wheels in Columbia, Md.
Harry was deeply involved with St. Bartholemew’s Episcopal Church in Baltimore, Md., and later with Christ Episcopal Church in Columbia, Md., serving in both on the vestry and as a lay reader. He was also Scoutmaster of Troop 757 in Glenwood, Md.
Harry was predeceased by Faye (Irish) Henderson, his wife of 60 years; and his daughter-in-law, Helen.
He is survived by his sons Eric, Peter, and Stephen, daughters-in-law Laura and Diana; and grandchildren Ruth, Christopher, Geoffrey, Julia, and Cari.
A memorial service, delayed because of the coronavirus epidemic, will be held on August 20 at Christ Episcopal Church, Columbia, Md.
