A search is underway for people who reportedly fell out of a boat on Ellis Pond, a watershed located in the Oxford County town of Roxbury.
A dispatcher for the Oxford County Regional Communications Center confirmed the search, but said he was unable to provide any other details. The Maine Warden Service responded to the scene on West Shore Road along with emergency responders from the towns of Rumford and Mexico.
It was not clear how many people fell into the pond or what type of boat was involved, but Lakes Region Maine Fire and Rescue News tweeted that there were multiple people in the pond and that the boat was unoccupied as it headed under its own power toward shore. Lakes Region Maine Fire and Rescue News is an independent news service that monitors fire and rescue incidents that occur throughout Maine and New England.
The incident took place around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Ellis Pond, which is also known as Silver Lake and Roxbury Pond, is a 919-acre glacial lake in the towns of Roxbury and Byron. It contains two islands with the largest called French Island.
