Fire destroyed a single family home in Westbrook on Sunday afternoon, but none of the occupants or the firefighters, who battled the fire in extreme heat were injured.

There were four people inside the residence when the fire broke out. All of them were able to escape safely.

Westbrook Fire Chief Stephen Sloan said the two-alarm fire at 44 Puritan Drive, which is located in the city’s Prides Corner neighborhood, was reported just after 3 p.m.

Sloan said the single story ranch style home and an attached two-car garage were heavily damaged and are likely a total loss. The air temperatures, which were in the low 90s, according to the National Weather Service in Gray, placed a physical strain on firefighters.

“The ambient heat took a huge toll on our crews,” Sloan said, adding that firefighters had to take frequent breaks to stay hydrated.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious, but Sloan said he plans to meet on Monday with an investigator from the State Fire Marshal’s Office. The cause of the fire remains under investigation

Two family cats remain unaccounted for, the chief said.
