The work of the Jan. 6 committee has been important in demonstrating that Donald Trump broke his oath of office. I am grateful that the truth is being told with the help of courageous Republicans.

Meanwhile, another envelope came to my home last week with a huge “Donald J. Trump” in the upper left-hand corner. The letter inside was asking for a $1,000 donation “to support efforts to elect Trump Republican majorities to both houses” and was signed by Trump. The return address was the Republican National Committee. As a moderate American, I am sad and angry that the Republican Party leadership continues to pretend that nothing of significance happened in the aftermath of the 2020 election.

Moderate Republicans, independents and Democrats have not been hoodwinked. In our unity, we did not reelect Donald Trump. The Republican Party has betrayed our nation and the breach of trust continues with every Fox News distortion and RNC letter promoting Trump and his associates.

Citizens of Maine can hold the Maine GOP accountable. We can approach our local Republican leaders and get them on record for what they believe about Jan. 6. We can demand that they spend resources on promoting the truth in Maine and that they develop a professional code of behavior that supports rule of law.

Moderate Republicans, independents and Democrats have a duty to safeguard rule of law and our Constitution by voting against the current Republican Party in November.
