Jake Anastas, York, senior attack: A first team all-Western Maine Conference and all-American selection, Anastas had 62 goals and 36 assists to lead the Wildcats to a 13-win season and the Class B semifinals. Anastas will play at Bates College.

 

 

Henry Bergeron, North Yarmouth Academy, senior defense: An all-American, the 6-foot-5 Bergeron routinely played strong defense against the opponent’s top offensive threat. Bergeron forced more than 40 turnovers and recovered more than 100 ground balls. He also added two goals and seven assists in helping the Panthers reach the Class C state championship game. Bergeron will continue his career at Clarkson University.

Nic Boudreau, Cape Elizabeth, senior midfield/attack: An all-American, Boudreau recorded 48 goals and 25 assists to help the Capers repeat as Class A state champions. Boudreau added 18 ground balls and 12 forced turnovers while earning first team all-Western Maine Conference honors. He will play college lacrosse at Yale.

 

 

Colin Campbell, Cape Elizabeth, senior midfield/attack: With 30 goals and 48 assists for the state champions, Campbell was one of three Cape Elizabeth players to earn all-American status. He also grabbed 40 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers, and was a first team all-Western Maine Conference selection. Campbell plans to play at Bowdoin.

Steve Fulton, Yarmouth, senior midfield: An all-American as well as a Western Maine Conference Class A/B first-team selection, Fulton tallied 42 goals and 28 assists in helping the Clippers reach the Class B state championship game. A complete two-way player, Fulton grabbed 42 ground balls and initiated most of Yarmouth’s offense, said Coach Jon Miller.

 

 

Roan Hopkins, Waynflete, junior midfielder: Hopkins scored 23 goals and added 31 assists to help the Flyers take the Class C state championship with a 9-8 double-overtime victory over North Yarmouth Academy. A first-team all-Western Maine Conference Class C selection, Hopkins scored four goals in the state final. He finished the season with 57 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers.

Ben Kieu, South Portland, junior goalie: Coach Dan Hanley called Kieu a big reason why the Red Riots were one of the most improved teams in the state, jumping from two wins in 2021 to 11 wins in 2022. A strong shot stopper with excellent stick work in the clearing game, Kieu made 146 saves while allowing 70 goals. He had a 68 percent save percentage, allowing an average of just under six goals per game.

 

 

Thomas Labbe, Brunswick, senior midfielder: An all-American and the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Labbe led the Dragons to the Class B state title, scoring five goals in a 14-13 win over Yarmouth. Labbe also scored four goals in a semifinal win over top-seeded Messalonskee, and had 34 goals and 33 assists in the regular season. He plans to play at Western New England University.

Tiernan Lathrop, Cape Elizabeth, senior midfield/attack: The Varsity Maine Boys’ Lacrosse Player of the Year, Lathrop is one of three Cape Elizabeth seniors to earn all-American honors after leading Cape to a second straight Class A title. Lathrop scored 57 goals and had 25 assists while causing 18 turnovers and recovering 54 ground balls. A first team all-Western Maine Conference selection, Lathrop will play at Bryant University.

 

 

Alex St. John, Thornton Academy, senior defense: A two-time all-American and the Southwestern Maine Activities Association two-time Player of the Year, St. John led the Trojans to the Class A South championship game as a defensive stalwart. St. John had 139 ground balls and forced 41 turnovers while tallying 19 goals and 10 assists. He’ll continue his career at High Point University, a Division I school in North Carolina.

Brennen Wade, Messalonskee, senior defense: A two-time all-American and first-team Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference selection, Wade was a defensive standout for the Eagles. He led Messalonskee to an 11-win regular season and the top seed in the Class B tournament, compiling 71 ground balls while scoring two goals and eight assists. Wade will attend Southern New Hampshire University, where he plans to play lacrosse.

 

 

Ben Wentworth, Falmouth, senior defense: A two-time first team all-SMAA selection, Wentworth earned all-America honors by anchoring the Navigators’ defense. Wentworth caused 37 turnovers in leading Falmouth to the Class A North title and a spot in the Class A state championship game. He also had 71 ground balls and assisted on three goals. Wentworth plans to attend the University of Maine and study biology.

 

 

COACH OF THE YEAR

Dan Hanley, South Portland: Under Hanley, the Red Riots were the most improved team in the state, going from a 2-12 record in 2021 to 11-3 in 2022. South Portland reached the Class A South semifinals and enjoyed a six-game winning streak in the regular season.
