STANDISH — Bridget Collins, Shauna Clark and Carson Battaglia scored fourth-quarter goals and the St. Joseph’s women’s lacrosse team held on to beat Johnson & Wales 10-9 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship game on Saturday.

The Monks improved to 20-0 and earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament. The tournament bracket will be announced Monday. Johnson & Wales drops to 15-7.

St. Joseph’s trailed 6-3 at the half, but scored four straight goals to take the lead. Johnson & Wales took the lead back on a pair of goals by Taina Gamory.

Collins had three goals for the Monks, while Battaglia and Lydia Dexter had two each for St. Joseph’s. Gamory had five goals for Johnson & Wales.

TUFTS 10, COLBY 7: The third-seeded Jumbos (14-3) scored the last five goals of the game and beat the second-seeded Mules (14-3) in a NESCAC semifinal in Middlebury, Vermont.

Caroline Walter had three goals for Tufts, which will face No. 1 Middlebury in the conference final. Anna Clarke and Caroline Conaghan each added two. Ally Franz had four goals for Colby.

MEN’S LACROSSE

BOWDOIN 15, AMHERST 14: Will Byrne scored to tie it with 15 seconds left and Ethan Barnard scored the winner seven seconds later as the second-seeded Polar Bears (15-1) rallied past the third-seeded Mammoths (10-5) in the NESCAC semifinals in Medford, Massachusetts.

Bowdoin advances to the conference championship game and will face No. 1 Tufts at noon Sunday.

Byrne finished with four goals for Bowdoin. Patrick Fizgerald added three, while Mat Ward, Jason Lach and Donal Mullane had two each.

BASEBALL

UMASS LOWELL 5, MAINE 2: Joshua Becker allowed two runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking two in eight innings as the Riverhawks (20-25, 10-13 America East) beat Maine (24-15, 20-3) to end the Black Bears’ 14-game winning streak, in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Jacob Humphrey was 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI for UMass Lowell.

Connor Goodman and Quinn McDaniel each had two hits and an RBI for Maine.

AMHERST SWEEPS BOWDOIN: The Jumbos (15-16-1) beat the Polar Bears (16-19) twice, 16-7 and 9-2, to win their best-of-three NESCAC tournament series 2-0 in Brunswick.

Jack McDermot hit a grand slam in the first game for Amherst. Chris Murphy added four hits, three RBI and three runs scored. Nick Merrill hit a grand slam for Bowdoin.

Jacob Ribitzki pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits in the second game for Amherst.

COLBY SWEEPS WESLEYAN:  Clint Maher was 3 for 4 with three RBI as the Mules (23-11) built a 7-0 lead and defeated the Cardinals (18-16) 10-1 to sweep the best-of three quarterfinal series in Waterville.

Clint Flippo and Dylan Nastri each had a pair of hits for Colby, while Brady O’Brien added two hits, including a home run.

The Mules won the opener 10-9 in 11 innings on a Maher walk-off homer.

Colby advances to a NESCAC double-elimination championship weekend.

ST. JOSEPH’S WINS TWICE: The Monks (29-13) scored eight runs in the first inning to win their second game of the day, beating Elms College (16-19) 12-1 to stay alive in the GNAC tournament in Standish.

Ben Gravel hit a two-run home run in the first. Jonathan Dube added three hits and Zach Miles had two hits and two RBI.

In its first game Saturday, St. Joseph’s beat Anna Maria (23-16)  4-0 to eliminate the AmCats. Jonathan Dube hit a two-run single in the first inning to give the Monks the lead. He finished with three RBI.

Jason Johnson pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits, while striking out four and walking two to earn his sixth win of the season. Luke Stephens finished the shutout, allowing two hits and striking out one in two innings.

St. Joseph’s advances to play Johnson & Wales in the championship portion of the tournament on Sunday. The Monks need to win twice to win the title.

SOFTBALL

ST. JOSEPH’S WINS TWICE: The Monks (20-17) beat Albertus Magnus and Simmons to stay alive in the GNAC tournament in Boston.

In its first game Saturday, the Monks scored three times in the fifth inning to beat Albertus Magnus, 5-3.

Lydia Goodnough was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Monks. Olivia Howe added two hits and an RBI and Ashley Emery was 2 for 4.

In their second game, St. Joseph’s scored four times in the fourth inning to beat Simmons (26-13-1) 5-3. Sylvia Foley had three hits, drove in two and scored a run.

St. Joseph’s advances to face Emmanuel in a elimination game at 10 a.m Sunday. The winner will face Johnson & Wales in the championship portion of the tournament.

MIDDLEBURY 7, COLBY 2: Noelle Ruschil hit a grand slam in the fourth inning as the Panthers (20-9) eliminated the Mules (19-15) from the NESCAC tournament in Medford, Massachusetts.

Ruschil had five RBI for Middlebury. Megan Fox added a two-run double in the first inning.

Amanda Cabral had a sacrifice fly and Jackie Hill had an RBI double for Colby.

HARTFORD 6, MAINE 2: Julianna Kocenski hit a three-run home run in the first inning as the Hawks (16-30, 5-13 America East) beat the Black Bears (8-35, 4-12) in West Hartford, Connecticut.

Grace McGouldrick scored on a sac fly by Izzy Nieblas in the first inning and Katie Jo Moery scored in the second for Maine.
