Jake Marquez capped a seven-run first inning with a two-run homer, and the University of Maine baseball team extended its winning streak to 12 games Saturday afternoon with a 15-2 victory over Hartford in an America East game in Orono.
Jordan Schulefand went 5 for 6 and scored three runs, and Scout Knotts was 3 for 5 with four RBI, including a two-run single in the first. Jeremiah Jenkins and Connor Goodman also drove in two runs apiece as Maine improved to 22-14 overall and 17-3 in America East.
Caleb Keys got the win, allowing seven hits and one run in five innings.
SOUTHERN MAINE SWEEPS KEENE STATE: Joshua Joy pitched a no-hitter, striking out 11 and walking three, as the Huskies (18-16, 8-5 Little East) completed a doubleheader sweep against the Owls (6-25, 2-11) with a 7-0 win n Gorham.
Tom Vesosky had three RBI as Southern Maine won the first game, 5-2.
Cam Seymour finished with five RBI in the doubleheader.
COLBY SWEEPS TRINITY: Drew Miller hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Mules (19-11, 7-4 NESCAC) to a 2-1 win in the first game of a doubleheader with the Bantams (14-16, 6-5) in Waterville.
Cole Palmeri hit a three-run home in the in the second inning as the Mules rolled to a 9-2 win in the second game. Charlie Furlong added two hits.
BATES, BOWDOIN SPLIT: Ben McKenzie was 6 for 6 with a double and a home run, drove in five runs and scored five as Bowdoin (15-17, 8-4 NESCAC) won 17-9 in the second game of a doubleheader against Bates (7-25, 2-10) in Lewiston.
Antonio Jareno was 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored in the first game, leading Bates to an 11-3 win.
ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS LASELL: Drew Healey, Ben Gravel and Zach Miles each hit an RBI single in the first inning to start the Monks (27-11, 16-1 GNAC) on the way to a pair of 3-1 wins over the Lasers (17-19, 11-5) in Waltham, Massachusetts.
Healey hit a solo home run in the first inning of the second game.
SOFTBALL
TUFTS SWEEPS BATES: Meggie Murphy went 2 for 4 with a home run an the Jumbos (30-9, 11-1 NESCAC) beat the Bobcats (8-16, 1-11) 8-0 in six innings in the second game of a doubleheader in Lewiston.
The Jumbos had 13 hits, including home runs by Michelle Adelman and Bela Jimenez, on their way to a 12-2 win in the opener.
Lindsey Kim and Rachel Liazos each had three hits in the first game for Bates.
SOUTHERN MAINE SWEEPS CASTLETON: Samantha Hauck hit an RBI single and Lauren Miller scored on an error as the Huskies (22-13, 13-3 Little East) rallied to a 2-1 win over the Spartans (17-14, 8-8) to sweep a doubleheader in Gorham.
Rona Scott hit a two-run single and Merrill had an RBI single as Southern Maine scored five times in the fifth inning to win the opener, 7-2.
U. OF NEW ENGLAND SWEEPS WENTWORTH: Abby Miner hit an RBI single in the eighth inning as the Nor’easters (17-19, 10-6 Commonwealth Coast) won 7-6 in the first game of a doubleheader with the Leopards (2-13, 9-6) in Biddeford.
UNE scored three runs in the first, including an RBI double by Miner, and four more in the second to win the second game, 9-3.
Grace Tutt was 3 for 4 with two RBI in the second game, while Kate Wilmot had two hits and two RBI.
COLBY, TRINITY SPLIT: Abby Orso allowed two singles in five innings to earn the win and was 3 for 4 with six RBI and two runs scored as the Mules (19-14, 7-5) NESCAC beat the Bantams (18-13, 8-4) 14-0 in five innings to earn a split of a doubleheader in Hartford, Connecticut.
Chloe Wilcox was also 3 for 4, including a two-run home run for Colby. Ashley Ketchum added three hits.
The Mules scored three times in the seventh inning of the second game, but Trinity held on to win, 6-5.
ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS LASELL: Rylee Page was 4 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored as the Monks (17-16, 11-5 GNAC) beat the Lasers (14-22, 6-12) 9-5 to earn a doubleheader sweep in Standish.
Olivia Howe added three RBI for St. Joseph’s.
Meredith Pence allowed five hits, struck out 13 and walked one as St. Joseph’s won the first game, 7-0.
MEN’S LACROSSE
BOWDOIN 13, HAMILTON 11: Will Byrne scored four goals to help the Polar Bears (15-1) beat the Continentals (7-7) in a NESCAC quarterfinal in Brunswick.
Patrick Fitzgerald and Jason Lach each added three goals for Bowdoin.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
ST. JOSEPH’S 20, ELMS 4: Bridget Collins scored five goals as the top-seeded Monks (18-0) beat the Blazers (7-8) in a GNAC quarterfinal in Standish.
Carson Battaglio added four goals for St. Joseph’s, which advances to the semifinals on Tuesday. Megan Mourmouras, Lydia Dexter and Shauna Clark each added three goals.
COLBY 20, BOWDOIN 13: Julia Jardina scored four of her five goals in the first half as the Mules (14-2) took a 15-8 lead and beat the Polar Bears (9-7) in a NESCAC quarterfinal in Waterville.
Annie Eddy and Elizabeth Hennessey had four goals each for Colby, who advances to face Tufts in the semifinals on May 7. Ainsley Dion had three.
Sophia Sudano had three goals, while Lauren Burke and Colleen McAloon each had two for Bowdoin.
WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 17, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 5: The Golden Bears (13-5) outscored the Nor’easters (4-13) 10-1 in the second half to win a Commonwealth Coast Conference playoff game in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Samantha Vitka had six goals and three assists for Western New England. Morgan White and Kelsey Hartigan each had two goals for UNE.
WESTERN CONNECTICUT 14, SOUTHERN MAINE 11: Dominique DeMarsico scored seven goals as the Wolves (13-4, 7-0 Little East) beat the Huskies (10-6, 4-3) in Danbury, Connecticut.
Alexa Riggio added three goals and Colleen Foley had two for Western Connecticut State.
Evelyn Hinkley had four goals and Rachel Shanks three for Southern Maine.
