Theodore Richmond Towne, 91 years, a resident of North Berwick, formerly of Kennebunk and Dexter, Maine, died Friday, March 18, 2022 at Pinnacle Health and Rehabilitation Center in North Berwick following a lengthy illness surrounded by his loving family.
Theodore was born in Biddeford on Sept. 1, 1930, a son of Richmond S. and Rachel (Irwin) Towne. He graduated from Kennebunk High School. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army, married his high school sweetheart, and served in Korea during the Korean War.
He worked at Prime Tanning in Berwick for many years, and was a lobster fisherman out of Kennebunkport, while they raised their six children. Later Ted and Charlotte owned and operated an antique business in North Berwick and in Dexter. He spent many hours refinishing and refurbishing furniture and other antiques. He and his wife enjoyed years of traveling the eastern seaboard as thanks to their antique business.
Ted spent seven years on the Kennebunk school board. He was active in several area churches, including Bethel Christian Church in North Berwick where he was a deacon and adult Sunday school teacher; at Family Christian Center in Berwick where he served as a deacon and board member; and was a board member for Linda Gove Ministries.
Ted enjoyed spending time with his family, laughing and joking, fishing and camping at Frost Pond Camps, driving the Golden Road looking for game, and getting beat at Phase 10. He loved watching and going to basketball games, especially when his grandchildren were playing. He and Charlotte enjoyed several cross-country trips with family. Ted faithfully enjoyed long walks, late into his 80s, with his beloved dog, Duke.
Theodore was predeceased by a son, Mark Towne, a daughter, Debbie Archer and by a sister, Elaine Swett.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 68 years, Charlotte Anna (Nichols) Towne of North Berwick; his brother Howard Towne of California; his son, Timothy Towne and his wife Rebecca of North Berwick; daughters Linda Gove and husband Manley of South Berwick, Karen Towne of Berwick, Laure Lee Robbins and husband Allen of Frankfort, Maine; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, and tow step great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, March 28, 2022, at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. A private interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Kennebunk.
