Town Councilor Paul Johnson resigned from the Scarborough Town Council this week to accept a position with the Greater Portland Council of Governments as its senior economic development manager.
Johnson will manage the agency’s revolving loan programs and will develop a new GPCOG service, providing planning services to cities and towns and developers to help grow good jobs, according to GPCOG.
He submitted his resignation from the council Tuesday, effective immediately, according to the town.
The Town Council will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, March 30, at 6 p.m. to address the vacancy. Councilors will consider setting dates for nomination papers to become available for those who wish to run for the seat and for a special election.
The winner’s term will expire in 2024.
This story was updated March 25 to add information about Johnson’s new position.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
