NEWARK, N.J. — Jack Hughes scored twice and the New Jersey Devils broke loose for five second-period goals — four in a six-minute span — to erase an early deficit and defeat the New York Rangers 7-4 on Tuesday night.

Nico Daws made 31 saves for the Devils, who snapped an eight-game losing streak to the rival Rangers. Ryan Graves, P.K. Subban, Dawson Mercer, Tomas Tatar and Yegor Sharangovich also scored for New Jersey as the Devils shelled New York netminder Igor Shesterkin for five goals on 13 shots in the middle period.

Shesterkin had allowed two or fewer goals in 11 of his past 14 starts. Alexandar Georgiev replaced the usually unflappable Rangers starter to begin the third.

Shesterkin made 19 saves and Georgiev, who blanked first-place Carolina on Sunday night, stopped five shots in the third. Georgiev allowed Hughes’ 20th goal — and 100th career point — at 9:36 of the third on the power play before the 20-year-old forward scored again at 10:46.

It was the third seven-goal outburst this season for the Devils, who had lost four of their past five games including all three on a trip to Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton.

Mika Zibanejad opened the scoring for the Rangers at 7:10 of the first, depositing his 26th goal of the season past Daws. Chris Kreider and Alexis Lafreniere assisted. Zibanejad, who has reached the 25-goal mark for the fifth time in his career, has goals in six of his last 10 games and points in 16 of his last 21.

Adam Fox made it 2-0 at 13:55 with his 10th goal, with an assist to Zibanejad. The Norris Trophy-winning defenseman has points in nine of his last 12 games.

After outshooting the Devils 14-11 in the first, the Rangers were dominating the second before Graves broke through for New Jersey at 7:12. Subban tied it with his fifth goal at 8:30.

Mercer put the Devils ahead 3-2 at 12:40 with his 16th goal before Tatar scored his 12th at 13:13. New Jersey even had a goal disallowed for offside following a Rangers replay challenge before Sharangovich extended the cushion to 5-2 with his 16th at 18:07.

Devils leading scorer Jesper Bratt had two assists, as did Graves and captain Nico Hischier.

BLUES 5, CAPITALS 2: Nathan Walker scored the go-ahead goal hours after being called up, helping visiting St. Louis snap a three-game skid.

Brandon Saad and Brayden Schenn each had a goal and an assist, and captain Ryan O’Reilly scored on the power play for St. Louis, which had lost 7 of 9. David Perron added an empty-netter to extend his goal-scoring streak to seven games, and Ville Husso made 19 saves for his 16th victory of the season.

A big concern moving forward may be the status of defenseman Torey Krug, who left in the second period with an upper-body injury and did not return.

Tom Wilson had a goal and an assist and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored for Washington.

PENGUINS 5, BLUE JACKETS 1: Jake Guentzel scored twice during a furious second-period surge, and Pittsburgh won at home.

Radim Zohorna and Bryan Rust also scored during the second for Pittsburgh. Evgeni Malkin added a power-play goal in the third as the Penguins won their third straight. Tristan Jarry stopped 26 shots to improve to 7-1 in his last eight starts.

Gustav Nyquist gave the Blue Jackets an early lead with a power-play goal but Columbus simply couldn’t keep up.

Sebastian Aho also scored for Carolina, and Seth Jarvis had two assists. Frederik Andersen made 27 saves for just his second win this month.

Nick Paul scored in his first Tampa Bay game and Alex Killorn closed the gap with 59.3 seconds remaining. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 38 shots, but the Lightning lost for the fifth time in its last seven games.

ISLANDERS 3, SENATORS 0: Semyon Varlamov made 24 saves in his first shutout of the season, leading New York to a win at home.

Scott Mayfield, Anders Lee and Zach Parise scored in the third period. Brock Nelson finished with three assists as the Islanders won for the sixth time in eight games.

RED WINGS 6, FLYERS 3: Jakub Vrana scored twice and Detroit won for the second time in nine games, defeating visiting Philadelphia.

Tyler Bertuzzi had a goal and two assists, and Oskar Sundqvist, acquired from St. Louis on Monday, contributed an empty-netter and an assist in his Detroit debut. Rookie Lucas Raymond supplied his 20th goal and Joe Veleno also scored. Dylan Larkin, Pius Suter and Filip Hronek each had two assists. Alex Nedeljkovic made 30 saves for Detroit, which was 1-6-1 in its previous eight games.

Joel Farabee, Oskar Lindblom and James van Riemsdyk scored for the Flyers. Carter Hart stopped 25 shots.
