A friend emailed yesterday with the sad news of Gabe Walker’s passing. He’d seen Melanie Creamer’s lovely obituary in the March 12 Press Herald.

I knew Gabe for many years – we were “gym rats” at the USM Sullivan Gym in Portland. I was struck by his calm, friendly demeanor, warm smile and amusing, loping gait. He always seemed quietly centered.

It was lovely to read his son’s comments on his dad and to know that he impacted the lives of many students at Deering High School. How fortunate his students were to have him as their teacher.

The world needs more Gabe Walkers.
