The town of Falmouth is advising residents to keep an eye out for browntail moth nests throughout the winter.
In January, Falmouth had a professional assessment done for browntail moths and nests that were within 20 feet of public roads and town-owned property and parks to identify high-risk areas that may need to be treated. While no high-risk areas were found, that does not mean browntail moths have been eradicated in Falmouth, according to the town.
Residents who are interested in having trees on their property treated for browntail moths can check a list of qualified contractors at maine.gov.
Browntail moth is an invasive species that has been spotted in all Maine counties, according to the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. Their hairs can cause a rash and breathing problems for people and they can also destroy hardwood trees.
