Dangerous snow and ice conditions have contributed to more than 500 blood drive cancellations since the beginning of the year, resulting in about 17,000 uncollected blood and platelet donations.
The American Red Cross asks those who are able to schedule the earliest-available blood or platelet donation appointments in their community to rebuild the blood supply.
More donors are needed to make appointments now for the weeks ahead to help ensure accident victims, cancer patients and new mothers experiencing complicated childbirths have access to lifesaving blood product transfusions without delay.
Make an appointment to give blood or platelets by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling (800) 733-2767).
Through Feb. 28, all donors will receive an Amazon gift card.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
