Portland author Lily King is one of three finalists for The Story Prize, an award given to outstanding short story collections.
King is nominated for her collection “Five Tuesdays in Winter,” which was published in November. The other two finalists are J. Robert Lennon for “Let Me Think” and Brandon Taylor for “Filthy Animals.” The award comes with a $20,000 prize.
The winner will be announced April 13 at a private event that will be livestreamed on The Story Prize website, according to a news release announcing the nominees Tuesday. The event will include readings by and interviews with the finalists, who were chosen from 119 submissions.
Previous winners of The Story Prize, now in its 18th year, include Maine author Elizabeth Strout and Bowdoin College graduate Anthony Doerr.
King is the New York Times bestselling author of five novels: “The Pleasing Hour,” “The English Teacher,” “Father of the Rain,” “Euphoria” and “Writers & Lovers.” “Writers & Lovers” is being developed into a film, according to reports last year in Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. Actress Toni Collette is slated to direct and write the screenplay with Nick Payne, known for the Netflix series “The Crown.”
