Carole E. Lovejoy

SOUTH PORTLAND – Carole E. Lovejoy of South Portland, passed away on Jan. 29, 2022. She passed one day after her 89th birthday in Portsmouth, N.H.

Mrs. Lovejoy was born in Portland to Carl F. Winn of Keene, N.H. and Eleanor G. Annis of Veazie on Jan. 28, 1933. She went to South Portland High School when it was housed at the now Mahoney Junior High School, graduating in 1951.

Carole worked for a few years in Washington D.C. at the Veterans Administration Office. Upon returning to Maine, she met and eventually married Richard H. Lovejoy Sr., traveling to Delaware and Mississippi with him on duty with the Air Force.

The couple had four children, divorcing in 1963. Carole went on to raise her family by herself. Mrs. Lovejoy worked as an office manager at the Federal Aviation Administration. She worked there for over 30 years, obtaining numerous awards and even her Flight Standard Wings. Carole enjoyed reading and doing puzzles. She had fun making crafts to sell at the Betsy Ross House Christmas Fair. She also made baked beans for the fair. They would sell out quickly, so you had to get there early if you wanted them.

Carole lived at the Betsy Ross house for 15 years where she enjoyed her outings with the Red Hat Society and making sure other residents obeyed the rules. Carole made wonderful treats during the Christmas holidays, her Needham’s and Suet pudding was savored by her family.

Mrs. Lovejoy is preceded in death by her parents.

Carole is survived by daughters Gayla Howard of Clearwater, Fla., Dawn Lovejoy and her partner Cathy Docker of Clearwater, Fla., sons Richard Lovejoy and wife Elaine of Buxton, Scott Lovejoy and wife Sheila of South Portland; grandchildren Erik Lovejoy and wife Kandy of Salem, Mass., Casey Lovejoy of Kennebunk, Scott Lovejoy Jr. and his fiancée Jenn Oles of Carlisle, Pa., Sandra Lovejoy of South Portland and Shane Lovejoy of Rome; great-grandchildren Carter and Willa Lovejoy of Massachusetts.

A private family Ceremony will be held later in the spring.

Arrangements are under the guidance of Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland, and burial will be at Brooklawn Memorial Park.
