Warren enrolls as Democrat

To the editor,

My goal when I ran for State Representative in Scarborough Coastal District 29 in the summer of 2020 was to do the best I could at all times for my hometown. I ran as an independent. I believe in independent thinking and actions. That is how I have led my life.

Serving my first year in the Maine Legislature, I found I was not as effective as I wanted to be as one of only four Independents in a body of hundreds who otherwise choose a political party through which to work. At the end of that first year, I reflected on whether I could improve in service to Scarborough. I considered my options. I like much about the Republican, Democratic and Green Political Parties. I made the decision to enroll as a Democrat, because climate change is the issue that has been my focus and being part of this party is the way I believe I can be most effective as an elected representative for my constituents. I will be able to collaborate more easily with my colleagues, be part of more meaningful dialogue, find support from advocacy groups and advocates, and gain more allies in floor debate.

If you have questions about my decision, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I am happy to discuss it with you and answer your questions. You can reach me by mailat PO Box 1, Scarborough, ME 04070, by email at sophie.warren@legislature.maine.gov or call me at (207) 450-0765.

Sophie Warren, State Representative
