Lillian was born in Portland on Jan. 8, 1936, to Elizabeth J. and Stephen E. Mercer Sr. She grew up with her older sister, Dorothy and younger brother, Stephen on Falmouth Foreside. Lillian graduated from Falmouth High School and was on the high school’s championship girls’ basketball team. Lillian married the love of her life, Wayne Strout, on May 14, 1955. Lillian and Wayne raised their children in Portland.
Lillian was a member of the former St. Lawrence Congregational Church on Munjoy Hill. She actively participated in the Christian Missionary Alliance Church on Washington Avenue and then the First Baptist Church on Canco Road.
Lillian worked at American Can Co., Tower Publishing, and after many years retired from Macpage. Lillian enjoyed taking day trips with her friends and traveling to visit family and friends in Newfoundland. Lillian was an avid reader, frequenting the Falmouth Library. She was an accomplished knitter; her family enjoys the many intricate sweaters, scarves, and beautiful mittens she created. Lillian, with her enviable green thumb, enjoyed her gardens at her home on Sumac Street. In her younger days, she was known for hooking the biggest bass, along with the occasional owl or turtle. Lil was a resident of The Cedars since 2017 and enjoyed many activities with the residents of the Black Wolf unit, especially Bingo.

She leaves behind her children Wayne (Susan) of Sumner, Constance Wall (Kevin) of Amesbury, Mass., Diane Davis (Willie) of Salem, Ore.; her sister, Dorothy Pooler of Hollis Center; and a host of grandchildren, step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; extended family, and friends.
