FALMOUTH — It’s never easy stepping into a team as a freshman as Lexi Morin has this year for the Brunswick High girls’ basketball team.
But, she said, the upperclassmen on the team made it easier for her, welcoming her to the Dragons and helping her adjust to the varsity level.
“I think I’m getting the hang of it,” she said.
You could say that.
Morin scored 17 points Tuesday night, including four in the final minutes, as top-ranked Brunswick held off Falmouth 53-39 in a Class A South matchup. The Dragons built a 17-point halftime lead, saw it shrink to four with 3:06 remaining, then closed the game on a 10-0 run to improve their record to 10-0. Falmouth is 6-4.
“It’s never easy,” said Brunswick Coach Sam Farrell. “But they didn’t get rattled. And they do it together. The bench is cheering. We have players sprinting across picking each other off the floor … Nothing seems to faze them. They’re a heck of a group. And I’m lucky.”
It was an impressive showing by Brunswick, which hit nine 3-pointers, six in the first half. Logan Brown, who led Brunswick with 20 points, hit back-to-back 3’s in the last minute of the second quarter to give the Dragons a 28-11 halftime lead.
But Falmouth, which was without standout guard Anna Turgeon, finally started hitting some shots in the third and closed the gap to 41-31 entering the fourth. There, the Navigators continued to surge.
“I think when you’re down 17 at the half, you’ve just got to go out and play,” said Falmouth Coach Dawn Armandi. “We just wanted to make it a game. And we did.”
With Falmouth trailing 43-34, Sloane Ginevan, who led Falmouth with 19 points, put in her offensive rebound. Then with 3:06 remaining, Emily Abbott (11 points) hit a 3-pointer to pull Falmouth within 43-39. Those were the Navigators’ final points of the game.
Kelsie Carlton followed Abbott’s 3 with a left-handed drive. Then, after a Falmouth miss, Brown scored on a reverse layup with 1:54 remaining to make it 47-39. After Falmouth was called for an illegal screen, Morin hit two foul shots.
Freshman or no, she swished both.
“I just told myself to relax,” she said. “Take a deep breath and put them in the hoop and keep our team ahead.”
After a Falmouth turnover, Morin scored again, this time inside, and the Dragons had the game locked up.
“We just had to calm each other down and remember we need to play as a team,” said Brown. “That’s our thing. So we just reminded ourselves of that, calmed down and got it back.”
Another key was the defense of Brunswick’s Morgan Foster on Ginevan in the fourth. After Falmouth scored 20 points in the third, Farrell switched the Dragons into a diamond-and-1 defense – “Which we haven’t practiced,” he said. – with Foster guarding Ginevan. Ginevan scored only two points in the fourth, and Falmouth scored only eight.
“It just seemed whenever they scored, we came back and scored,” said Farrell. “And that’s been our mantra all season.”
