It’s not the way you’d normally draw it up, but Scarborough girls’ basketball coach Mike Giordano reached the 300-win plateau Tuesday night in impressive fashion, as his Red Storm dug out of a 15-point first half hole to knock off previously undefeated Gorham, 44-39, at Alumni Gymnasium.

“It’s a pretty significant number and it’s been a goal for a long time,” said Giordano, who won 206 games between 1996 and 2013 as the South Portland girls’ coach and now has 94 victories in what is now his ninth season at Scarborough. “I also had the goal of winning one more than my high school coach, John McGuire (who coached boys’ basketball at Portland High), and I think he had 289. Winning 300 games is a special category and I’m proud to be one of the coaches to achieve it.

“I had one of my first Scarborough captains (Ashley Briggs) at the game last night, and a lot of people have reached out and left me messages the last 24 hours and that means a lot.”

Giordano won’t commit to making a run at 400 but says he still loves coaching and doesn’t plan to be done anytime soon.

“Since 400 is a long way away, I’m just going to make a run at 301 Friday (when Scarborough hosts another undefeated team, Cheverus),” Giordano said. “For me, it’s about the relationships and watching kids mature. I love this group of kids and we’re just chugging forward.”
