SKOWHEGAN — A 66-year-old Skowhegan man was found dead Sunday morning after his motorcycle veered off the road, according to police.

Michael Turner crashed his motorcycle the night before near 330 Bigelow Hill Road, according to Chief David Bucknam of the Skowhegan Police Department.

Bucknam said in a telephone interview Sunday the crash was reported just before 8 a.m.

Turner was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and suffered major head trauma, according to Bucknam.

“A resident on Bigelow Hill Road came out of her house to go for a run,” Bucknam said. “As she came out onto the road, she noticed a motorcycle in the ditch. That’s when she discovered (Turner).”

The investigation was ongoing Sunday afternoon, according to Bucknam, and speed is believed to have been a factor in the single-motorcycle crash. The speed limit is 40 mph in the area where the crash occurred.

“(Turner) came around a rather sharp corner on Bigelow Hill Road, lost control and it looks like he went off the road,” Bucknam said. “He struck some trees and was ejected from the motorcycle, where he came to a stop against a rock pile.”

Skowhegan police Officer Joshua York was the investigator at the scene of the crash, assisted by Officer Casey Dugas of the Fairfield Police Department.
