Summerfest is right around the corner
Though there won’t be a traditional Summerfest in Windham this year, the town is still being celebrated with a modified version that people of all ages can enjoy. Some of the fun activities that are planned include a town-wide, weeklong scavenger hunt, when local businesses and organizations can promote themselves in a variety of categories while Windham residents search for clues that will be scattered about town. The hunt takes place from June 12-19.
There will also be a golf ball drop on June 19 that is being sponsored by the Sebago Lakes Region Chamber, the Sebago Lake Rotary Club and Modern Woodsman. Golf balls will be dropped from the Windham Fire Department ladder truck and the “owner” of the ball that falls closest to the pin will win a cash prize. You have until June 18 to buy a chance for a golf ball at $10 each. The more people who participate, the bigger the prize will be.
For a more creative means of participation, enter the Facebook photo contest being organized by the Windham Parks & Recreation department. From June 6-12, photos showcasing Windham Eagle spirit will be in the running for a prize. From June 13-19, photos of scenic Windham will be judged. The weekly winner will be determined by who gets the most “likes” on Facebook. Submit your entries to facebook.com/WindhamSummerfest.
There will also be a “Yardi Gras,” where Windham residents and businesses are being invited to design entertaining and imaginative “floats,” such as those that would usually be featured in the Summerfest parade. The difference this year is that the floats will be set up in the front yards of businesses and residents all across town. Locals are invited to put together a display that demonstrates what summertime in the Lakes Region means to them. Dig out those camp chairs, tents, kayaks, canoes and grills. Pick your prettiest flowers and set a table for a picturesque barbeque. You set the scene. It’s a great way to express your creativity.
Windham Parks & Recreation will publish a map that lists all of the homes and businesses participating so local families can drive by and enjoy the wonderful vignettes. The deadline to register is Wednesday, June 9.
Awards will be given out in five categories: Best Depiction of the 2021 theme of “Summertime in the Lakes Region;” Best Depiction of the Summerfest theme, “Bringing Unity to the Community;” most creative presentation; most entertaining presentation; and best youth entry for children 15 and younger.
Summerfest will also honor a Windham citizen for their contribution to the community by naming a Summerfest grand marshal for this year’s event. Nominations are in and are under consideration by the Summerfest Committee. The big announcement will be made on Tuesday, June 8, at the Town Council meeting being televised live at 6:30 p.m. on WCCG TV-7. Be sure to tune in.
