Rain cancels Memorial Day ceremony

Veterans laid wreaths Monday at local monuments, while the ceremony planned for Riverbank Park was canceled due to showers. A parade was not scheduled.

Roger Barr, commander of Stephen Manchester Post 62 of the American Legion, and this year’s grand marshal, Roy McPherson, who is a member of Westbrook Memorial Post 197, laid wreaths in a brief ceremony at the base of the flagpole at the Veterans’ Rest Circle in Woodlawn Cemetery.

A wreath was also placed at the grave of Stephen W. Manchester, the first Westbrook soldier to die in France during World War I.

At Riverbank Park, wreaths were laid at the Civil War Soldier’s monument.

Book sale this Saturday

Friends of Walker Memorial Library, 800 Main St., is sponsoring its annual book sale from 9 a.m.to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5, outside the library.

Every child will be offered a free book.

The American Journal reported on June 2, 1971, that Gabrielle Vaillancourt, formerly of 106 Brown St., had moved to Wilton, where she had accepted a job as a housekeeper at the St. Mary’s rectory. She had previously been a housekeeper at Westbrook Community Hospital.
