Dorothy Schiavi Koutsivitis

PORTLAND – Dorothy Schiavi Koutsivitis, 97, passed away on Friday, May 21, 2021, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.

Dot was born April 7, 1924, in Bridgton, the daughter of the late John and Jenny Schiavi.

Dot met her husband, Nicolas, while he was in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Bridgton, while she was working at Schiavi Super Market, the family owned grocery store right on Main Street. They were married on Nov. 4, 1942, and shared 67 years before Nicolas death in 2009.

Together Nick and Dot owned, operated and taught in Pierre’s School of Beauty Culture for nearly 40 years, known by their thousands of students, as Mr. & Mrs. Pierre, retiring in 1979. In retirement she and Pierre did a little traveling, but she was, at heart, a homebody.

Dot started a second career as a Shaklee Food Supplement Supervisor, maintained beautiful vegetable and flower gardens, mastered upholstery, knitted and did needlepoint. Dottie, as some liked to call her, loved to cook Italian and Greek meals and outstanding baked goodies to share with family and friends. Sitting around was never her cup of tea. In the summer, Dot was happy behind her lawnmower and when it snowed she was just as happy behind her snow blower clearing the driveway right down to the blacktop. Dot and Pierre were members of the Italian Heritage Club, and especially enjoyed dancing to the Big Band Era socials held there.

Dorothy was predeceased by her parents; brother, Joseph and Julie Schiavi; sisters, Lina and Ed Hall, Mary and Armand Bruno.

She is survived by her son, Peter Koutsivitis, her twin grandsons, Anthony and Nicolas, former daughter-in-law, Cissy Forgone; her son, Charles and his wife Leslie Simonds; four nieces and a nephew; two granddogs, Lucy and Grace.

At the family’s request all services will be private.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, Maine. To view Dot’s memorial page, or to share an online condolence, please visit http://www.ConroyTullyWalker.com.
