Hope Acts, a Portland nonprofit serving asylum seekers and immigrants, and Project HOME, a project of the Quality Housing Coalition, are teaming up to help asylum seekers secure housing.
The organizations have created a housing coordinator position to work with landlords and asylum seekers to find and secure housing, facilitate transitions and train housing mentors and mentees.
Project HOME brings together landlords, housing readiness programs and housing mentors to support tenants who would otherwise be screened out of the tenant application process due to application fees, credit scores, tenant histories and move-in costs. Since 2012, Hope Acts has supported asylum seekers in overcoming these barriers with their Hope House, an apartment building that offers transitional housing to asylum seekers. Hope Acts also offers ESL classes and an Asylum Seeker Assistance Program that offers support in accessing services and completing paperwork.
