Portland Public Schools announced Monday that it will hold in-person commencement exercises next month for about 500 seniors scheduled to graduate from Portland, Deering and Casco Bay high schools.
Portland and Deering high schools will stage outdoor ceremonies while Casco Bay High School, which has fewer students, will hold its commencement inside Merrill Auditorium, according to a district news release.
Deering High’s graduation will take place June 2 on Memorial Field at 11 a.m. while Portland High’s will be held June 3 at 11 a.m. at Fitzpatrick Stadium. Casco Bay’s graduation will begin at 6 p.m. on June 3.
All graduates and guests will be required to wear masks, regardless of their vaccination status. They must also maintain 6 feet of physical distance at all times. Groups from the same household can sit together.
In August, more than 180 Portland High School senior participated in the school’s first ever drive-in graduation at the Ocean Gateway terminal, and Deering and Casco Bay high schools later followed suit.
“Last year’s graduations showed us that the venue of modality is less important than the joy and togetherness of the experience,” Superintendent Xavier Botana said in a statement. “In this hardest of years, I am looking forward to sharing similar joyful experiences this June with our resilient students and the Portland community.”
Each graduation will be filmed and professionally photographed. Video and photographs will be made available to students and families at a later date.
