As you move outside for the season, it may be time to take down those string lights and stop turning on your phone’s flashlight to refresh your drink after dark. Improving or adding to your outdoor lighting will not only extend your after-hours time outside, it will add to your home’s curb appeal and could add to its value. Kate Dickinson at Lighting by the Sea in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire picked out some of her favorite trending styles. She carries the brands featured here for their timeless style, durable materials and construction and for some, their made-in-America origins.

The Westover collection by Quoizel is a popular, minimalist style that comes in multiple finishes. Pictured here are the pendant lights in the collection.

MODERN MINIMALIST. With clean lines and extended silhouettes, Westover lamps by Quoizel are a twist on the traditional shapes of outdoor lanterns. Multiple finish options include matte black, antique or industrial brass, and beveled or seeded glass. These lanterns can fit into a variety of home styles. The Chateau Grande by Minka Lavery is a favorite—a traditional design with a modern turn, while this post lantern by Marine is a stripped down seaside classic. Zephyr by Quoizel evokes Frank Lloyd Wright’s favored proportions.

RUSTIC INDUSTRIAL. A farmhouse kitchen has been an interior trend with staying power, especially in our mostly rural state. Barn lighting is a little bit country, a little industrial and best used as overhead lighting on a garage or as spot lighting along a walkway. The goosenecked Classic Warehouse Shades by California-based Hi-Lite Manufacturing can be customized with color, finish and bulb guard accessories for a real on-the-farm feel.

NAUTICAL BY NATURE. In a coastal state, a light nautical theme can look natural on all types of properties. Coastal Armour lamps by Quoizel are weather-resistant and non-corrosive—perfect for oceanfront homes. They’ve been tested to withstand the extreme temperature fluctuations New England experiences. A favorite in-house style at Lighting by the Sea are antique-looking copper and brass lanterns that are locally made in Hampton, New Hampshire.

OUTDOOR FANS. A ceiling fan on the porch may seem like a Southern style amenity, but who can say no to a good idea? Avoid keeping the A/C on indoors all day and make your porch even more comfortable during the summer. Outdoor-rated fans come in so many styles, it can blend right in or become a stylish lighting choice at the center of your porch.
