Southern Maine Community College is awarding nearly $1.5 million in federal grants to students who are experiencing financial difficulties related to the coronavirus pandemic.
SMCC’s statement said the college has offered short-term loans, grants and help with buying food or books. SMCC has also provided new and used laptops and desktop computers.
The college has awarded Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriation Act grants averaging about $1,741 to 848 students, according to SMCC.
The college has awarded a total of nearly $2.9 million in federal grants to students since the pandemic began in March 2020. Last year, the college issued $1.4 million in grants to 899 students using funds from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
