BIDDEFORD — Suffolk University scored two runs in the sixth inning Wednesday to beat the University of New England 2-1 in the first game of a softball doubleheader.

Game 2 was stopped in the bottom of the fourth with runners on first and third, no outs, and Suffolk leading 7-6. The game will resume at a later date.

Taylor Depot’s RBI single in the fifth gave UNE (3-2, 2-1 CCC) a 1-0 lead.

Suffolk (10-15, 6-7) scored two runs in the sixth on RBI by Brooke Cloak and Savannah Scripter.

MEN’S LACROSSE

NICHOLS 15, U. OF NEW ENGLAND 7: Hunter Ferreira scored four goals as the Bison (1-7, 1-5 CCC) topped the Nor’easters (0-4, 0-4) at Biddeford.

Jordan White carried the UNE offense with four goals and an assist. Sam Palmisano, Alex York and Jack Martin scored one goal a piece. Griffin Jasin made 13 saves in goal.

Brandon Coates and Connor Santoni each had three goals for Nichols.

PLYMOUTH STATE 11, SOUTHERN MAINE 10: Nolan Burke, Mike Donnelly, Mike Fleury and Riley Roy all scored two goals for the Panthers (2-2, 1-1 LEC) as they  beat the Huskies (1-6, 0-4) at Gorham.

USM scored three unanswered goals to get within a goal, but Plymouth State controlled the clock down the stretch. Owen McNichols and Robert Porter combined for 10 saves in net for the Panthers.

Tanner Hebert scored six goals for USM. Andrew Lawrence and Nick James each had two.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

USC: Mark Trakh is retiring as coach after four years in his second stint with the school.

Trakh turns 66 next month. His overall record of 155-114 is second in program history behind Linda Sharp.

COLGATE: Colgate has named Ganiyat Adeduntan coach.

Adeduntan arrives after three seasons on Jennifer Rizzotti’s staff at George Washington. She helped the Colonials win an Atlantic 10 Conference championship in 2018 and served as the program’s recruiting coordinator.

Adeduntan, a 1,000-point scorer at Florida State under cCoach Sue Semrau, spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Northeastern and was head coach for two seasons (2012-14) at Division III Wheelock College in Boston.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

AUBURN: Former College of Charleston guard Zep Jasper has transferred to Auburn.

Auburn Coach Bruce Pearl said Jasper has signed an athletics financial aid agreement. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Jasper spent three seasons at College of Charleston and averaged 15.6 points per game last season, shooting 35% from 3-point range. He also averaged 3.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists.

The 6-foot-1, 170-pounder was a second-team All-Colonial Athletic Association player last season. Jasper more than doubled his scoring average from his sophomore season.
