A police standoff in Windham that lasted for nearly six hours ended peacefully Wednesday afternoon with the arrest of a 33-year-old man now charged with aggravated reckless conduct, domestic violence assault, domestic violence terrorizing and creating a police standoff.

Windham police said the standoff ended around 12:15 p.m after police negotiators persuaded Brandon Croy of Windham to come out of a home on Forest Avenue. Croy was taken to the Cumberland County Jail, according to a Facebook post by Windham police.

The standoff began around 6:15 a.m. when Windham officers went to the home to investigate a report of a domestic disturbance that included family members being threatened with a gun. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and Cumberland police also responded.

Officers got three or four members of the family to safety, but Croy refused to come out, police said.

“During the investigation, it was learned that one person was rather upset and had access to weapons,” Windham police Chief Kevin L. Schofield said.

Schofield said the man was “cooperative” and talked with police before surrendering.

Neighbors were notified about the incident, but were not evacuated and Schofield said there did not appear to be a threat to the neighborhood. He said officers helped neighbors leave safely for work.
