A COVID-19 outbreak at the Maine State Prison in Warren so far includes 12 people associated with the facility, the Maine Department of Corrections reported Thursday.
The first case connected to the outbreak was reported on March 16, according to the department. The department, in collaboration with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, then began implementing COVID-19 testing among a large group of staff and residents. As of Thursday, the total included 11 inmates and one staff member, who is awaiting confirmation through the PCR test.
The department reported no current cases of the coronavirus at any of its other facilities.
In addition, the first group of age-eligible residents of the Department of Corrections received their vaccination this week and 125 residents have been vaccinated so far, the department reported in a press release.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
