BUXTON — The crossing of Main Street and River Road once again ranked No. 1 among the town’s highest crash intersections in 2020, according to a recent Maine Department of Transportation report.
There were 23 accidents with eight injuries reported at the intersection last year.
The No. 2 high-crash intersection was Beech Plains Road with Narragansett Trail and River Road with 19 crashes with 14 injuries.
In 2019, the two intersections tied with 20 crashes each.
The Broadturn/Long Plains and Portland roads intersection was third with 16 crashes in 2020 and eight injuries. In 2019, 17 accidents were reported.
The 2020 top five included Joy Valley/Narragansett Trail/Salmon Falls Road and Brewster Place/Narragansett Trail/Old Orchard Road, which tied with 10 crashes each.
Buxton Police Chief Troy Cline could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
The Main Street-River Road intersection with a blinking traffic light has a high-crash history, with 19 in 2018 and 14 in 2017. Traffic on Main Street has the right of way while stop signs are posted on River Road.
The Beech Plains intersection, which is fully signalized, was not listed in 2018 among the top five in Buxton.
