John Balentine asks, “What’s a conservative to do?” (Here’s Something, Jan. 28) and he offers some decent ideas, such as engaging conservative principals, running for office, boning up on conservative studies, reading Milton Friedman, William F. Buckley and Ronald Reagan, and having political discussions that need not be divisive.
But then he shows his true colors. He recommends boycotting anti-conservative outlets. Hmm, I wonder where he would have earned a living in journalism all these years if he followed this dictate? He recommends listening to Rush Limbaugh, Howie Carr and Mark Levin and watching OAN. Sorry, these folks are not espousing Republican doctrine or values. They are leaders and enablers of the insurgency who want a radically different America than the one most reasonable people are trying to keep and make better. They refer to those who do not agree with them not as the opposition but as the Enemy. I do not recall Friedman, Buckley or Reagan calling any American the Enemy.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
