AUBURN — A local man suspected of shooting a woman at his apartment complex on University Street on Friday morning and then shooting himself has died, according to police.
Daniel Brown, 40, of 46 University St. was found in woods near Twitchell’s Airport in Turner with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Deputy Chief Timothy Cougle said. Brown was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where he died.
The unidentified woman, who police believe was either Brown’s girlfriend or wife, was listed in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the lower body and a hand, according to police.
She was found on an apartment porch by police responding to a report of a shooting about 9:30 a.m., Cougle said.
The Auburn Fire Department treated her at the scene and took her to Central Maine Medical Center.
A witness said a white pickup truck fled the scene. A deputy with the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office found the truck in Turner near Twitchell’s Airport. Auburn police and the deputy searched the area and found Brown in the woods. Police said he had shot himself.
Cougle said no others are believed to have been involved.
